Breast Surgery Q&A

What is breast surgery?

Breast surgery includes any procedure that changes the shape of the breasts. This includes medical procedures to treat conditions like breast cancer and cosmetic breast surgery.

Dr. Forgione-Rubino is a highly skilled general surgeon who performs medical breast surgery. She understands the concerns you may have when it comes to breast surgery and offers you a comfortable office suite where she answers all of your questions and performs any necessary procedures.

What are the types of breast surgery?

Dr. Forgione-Rubino and the team perform many types of breast surgery. These surgeries include:

Cyst aspiration

A cyst is a fluid-filled sac, and a cyst aspiration is a simple in-office procedure. A breast cyst is noncancerous but can cause discomfort. During the surgery, Dr. Forgione-Rubino numbs the skin then drains the breast cyst to ease the pain.

Biopsy

If you have an abnormal lump or growth in your breast tissue, Dr. Forgione-Rubino performs a biopsy to determine if the growth is cancerous. She does the biopsy at the office using local anesthesia and a small incision that doesn’t require stitches.

Dr. Forgione-Rubino gets results from your biopsy within 24 hours.

Breast conservation surgery

A partial mastectomy, or lumpectomy, is a type of breast cancer surgery that aims to preserve as much of your natural breast tissue as possible. Breast conservation surgery is the most common breast surgery for breast cancer and oncoplastic breast conservation is an even more refined type of breast surgery practiced by Dr. Forgione-Rubino.

During this procedure, Dr. Forgione-Rubino removes the abnormal tissue and a margin of normal tissue with the smallest incision possible and the most cosmetic. Radiation therapy usually follows breast conservation surgery.

Partial breast cancer radiation

Partial breast cancer radiation isn’t breast surgery, but is one of the treatments available at the office of Laureen Forgione-Rubino, M.D., F.A.C.S. This radiation therapy has fewer side effects and requires less time than whole breast cancer radiation.

Dr. Forgione-Rubino was the first surgeon in eastern Connecticut to offer partial breast radiation for her breast cancer patients.

Mastectomy

A mastectomy is a breast surgery that removes the entire breast. Dr. Forgione-Rubino performs a nipple sparing mastectomy in some cases, which improves cosmetic results.

The team works with a plastic surgeon to help those patients who elect to have reconstructive breast surgery.

What type of breast surgery is best for me?

Dr. Forgione-Rubino and the team work closely with you to help you decide what breast surgery best fits your needs. They talk to you about your diagnosis and surgical options.

The team also does genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which may help determine the type of breast surgery best suited for you.
