Varicose veins may seem unsightly. However, they can cause far greater problems than that, including pain and heaviness in your legs. Fortunately, several treatment options can turn them into a distant memory. Read on to learn more.

It’s hard to miss varicose veins or confuse them with other problems. After all, they form when blood vessels swell, creating discolored bulges beneath the surface of your skin.

But the signs of varicose veins don’t stop there. Additional symptoms often include:

  • A heaviness or achiness in your legs
  • Throbbing, burning, swelling, or muscle cramping in your lower legs
  • Pain that worsens after extended standing or sitting
  • Skin discoloration, ulcers, or itchiness around the vein

Fortunately, you can improve the look and feel of your legs with varicose vein treatment — and it’s far easier than you think.

Dr. Laureen Forgione-Rubino offers vein treatment services at her private practice in Manchester, Connecticut. And, unlike vein treatment in the past, it only takes an office visit with no lengthy downtimes afterward.

Do you have varicose veins? Here’s how Dr. Forgione-Rubino can help.

How varicose veins work

Varicose veins develop when valves in a vein stop working correctly. These tiny structures are supposed to keep blood flowing from your legs to your heart.

However, when they weaken or fail, gravity causes blood to start pooling in your leg, triggering the telltale signs of a varicose vein.

Anyone can develop varicose veins, but several factors increase your chances of the condition, such as:

  • Having a family history
  • Being overweight, obese, or pregnant
  • Being a woman or assigned female at birth
  • Aging
  • Spending long periods standing or sitting

Sometimes, you can manage varicose veins at home by elevating your legs, wearing compression stockings, and getting plenty of exercise.

But if varicose veins become unsightly, uncomfortable, or don’t respond to self-care methods, Dr. Forgione-Rubino has several treatment options.

How to banish varicose veins

People often delay varicose vein treatment because of stories they’ve heard about lengthy hospital stays and intense pain. However, times have changed, so there’s no reason to wait. Most varicose vein treatments don’t even require an incision anymore.

Dr. Forgione-Rubino typically uses three approaches to varicose vein treatment: sclerotherapy, endovenous laser treatment, and phlebectomy.

Sclerotherapy

If you have small varicose veins, Dr. Forgione-Rubino can often eliminate them with sclerotherapy.

This process involves injecting a chemical formula into your varicose vein. The substance damages and scars the vein’s lining, causing it to close.

Endovenous laser treatment

For larger varicose veins, Dr. Forgione-Rubino may suggest endovenous laser treatment. During this treatment, she inserts a thin laser fiber into your vein. The laser delivers heat to the vein’s lining, causing it to cave in and close.

Phlebectomy

Finally, Dr. Forgione-Rubino can remove problematic veins entirely during a phlebectomy — and it only takes a few pricks on your skin, no large incisions.

In most cases, varicose vein treatments only require a local anesthetic, and some treatments take as little as 20 minutes. Then you follow Dr. Forgione-Rubino’s at-home care plan, like wearing a leg wrap or compression stocking, as directed.
